What it costs

My standard rate for writing and editing is £35 an hour or £250 a day + VAT and expenses. 

I charge mileage at 40p a mile.

Every job will be different, but these sample costs might help you gauge what your job will come to. Remember, if you are a new client and would like to sample my work, you can Try before you buy. 

 

Newsletters and magazines If you want me to interview for and write an eight-page magazine with several stories a page, it would probably take up to three days - that's £750 + VAT. If you just want a two-sided newsletter and can provide me with bullet points covering what you want in it, I can write and design it for £200-250.       Websites To research and write a couple of web pages for you would take between half a day and a day - up to £250 + VAT. However, a bigger web project could take longer, depending on the size and nature of the site.
Annual reports and strategy documents These can be quite complex jobs, involving a few meetings and a lot of information-chasing. A clear, well-written report that sets out complicated information in language anyone can understand could take ten days' work - up to £2,500 + VAT.        Flyers A flyer or leaflet to advertise a product or give information could take anything from half a day to a day to write, depending on the size and purpose - from £125 to £250 + VAT.
Film scripts Working with a film crew to script and interview for DVDs can take anything up to two weeks, depending on the length and purpose of the DVD and the amount of involvement you need from me - budget for up to £2,500 + VAT.
